Supermarkets in Kenya have limited the purchase of maize flour packets to four due to panic buying caused by a recent price drop to Sh100 per two-kilo packet, as part of a four-week government subsidy program. This subsidy, announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta, aims to protect consumers by reducing the price of maize flour from Sh205 to Sh100. However, there is uncertainty about the subsidy's continuation after the elections, leading to mass purchases. Retailers now face challenges with unsold stocks and are negotiating with suppliers to recover costs paid for advanced deliveries. The total amount recovered is estimated to be over Sh175 million.
