Sylhet meat sellers in Bangladesh go on strike

Meat traders in Sylhet city on Thursday went on a strike suspending sales of beef and mutton, protesting at the meat prices fixed by the Sylhet City Corporation.The Sylhet City Meat Traders’ Cooperative Association called for the strike after an emergency meeting on the day.General secretary of the association Abdul Khalik said that the strike would continue until the prices were revised upward.He said that the Sylhet City Corporation authorities fixed the price of beef at Tk 600 per kilogram and the price of mutton Tk 850 per kg in the city.Khalik said that they would incur losses if they sell the meats at the stipulated prices because of the rising market prices of cattle.‘We have been requesting the city mayor to reconsider the meat prices for more than a month.
