Wholesale egg suppliers in Taipei have warned that they may cease sales indefinitely if the Taiwan Poultry Association (TPA) extends the current price freeze, which is intended to address a domestic shortage of eggs due to avian flu epidemics, increased feed costs, and a high number of molting hens. The current wholesale price of eggs in Taiwan is the highest in many years at NT$55 (US$1.79) per catty (600 grams). The TPA is reviewing the decision to freeze wholesale prices, with plans to adjust them based on the availability of imported eggs. The government agency overseeing animal industry, the Council of Agriculture (COA), has not been involved in the pricing decisions and respects the market mechanism.
