The Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) has registered a new pineapple variety, Tainung No. 23, with Japan's agricultural ministry for intellectual property protection. The variety, developed in 2019, is known for its mango fragrance, delicate taste, and lack of fibers, and has a long shelf life, making it suitable for export. Japan has become the leading export destination for Taiwanese pineapples, with 62.3% of the total export of 28,664 metric tons in 2021 being sent to Japan.
