Tajikistan has joined other Central Asian countries in banning the export of certain vegetables, including onions, carrots, and potatoes, in an effort to stabilize high market prices. The duration of the ban is not specified and may be in effect indefinitely. The decision was announced by the country's Minister of Agriculture, Kurbon Khakimzoda. The export ban is part of wider restrictions on onion exports in the region, with neighboring Uzbekistan also imposing similar measures. The price of onions in Tajikistan has reached record highs. The reasons for the ban on carrots are concerns about potential damage to the root crop still stored in the ground. Despite being a net importer of tubers, Tajikistan has also exported over 1,000 tons of carrots in 2021.
