The Mutarara district in Tete, Mozambique, has experienced a significant decrease of 88% in sesame production and sales this year, due to irregular rainfall caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon. The district had planned to sell over 3,500 tonnes of sesame but ended up selling only 413 tonnes. The El Niño phenomenon has destroyed sesame crops across 420 hectares, impacting over 400 producers. As a result, the producers have only managed to earn close to 27 million meticais from sesame sales.
