The FruitVeB Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organization and Product Council has raised concerns over the profitability of the green pea sector, with climatic reasons being a significant factor. This issue is of concern as green peas contribute a substantial portion to the raw material for the country's fruit and vegetable processing industry, particularly sweet corn. The adverse weather conditions have resulted in a delayed harvest and a reduced processing season, leading to potential quantitative losses and increased unit fixed costs. The green pea harvest is expected to decrease by 10-20% compared to previous years, and sweet corn by 18-23%. These losses are expected to negatively impact the competitiveness of the domestic refrigeration and canning industry in the European market.
