In the first quarter of 2021, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) halted the import of 1,203 tons of food from third countries due to various violations, including excessive pesticide residues, aflatoxins in nuts, and issues with honey. This volume represents 57% of the non-compliant food imports that were stopped at Bulgarian border crossings throughout all of 2020. The majority of the confiscated goods, including 560 tons of tangerines and 190 tons of sweet pepper, were destined for destruction, while some may be returned to their country of origin.
