Global trade in tropical fruits, including pineapple, avocado, mango, and papaya, saw a contraction in 2022, with volumes falling by 5% to 2.1 million tonnes for mangoes, mangosteen, and guava, 5% to 3.2 million tonnes for pineapple, 6% to 2.4 million tonnes for avocado, and 1% to 370,000 tons for papayas. This contraction is due to unfavorable weather conditions and supply chain issues, despite consistent global demand leading to higher prices. Africa has seen an increase in its market share for mangoes and avocados, with exports of these fruits rising by 23% and 12% respectively in 2022. However, pineapple exports have continued to decline, falling by 9% in 2022. The rise in prices has not been enough to cover increased production costs, leading to concerns about shrinking profit margins.
