This year, the Canadian fleet has been in a wait-and-see mode, waiting to see if the promised tariff reductions are actually implemented while also monitoring whether dock prices will rise. Over the past year, the issue of tariffs on seafood trade between China and Canada has caused some fishermen's income to drop by nearly 50%, with dock prices in BC falling from CAD 12.50/lb last year to around CAD 10.00/lb (approximately $7.34/lb). Megan Eadie, Executive Director of the BC Crab Fishermen's Association (BCCFA), said in an interview with UCN that the Chinese tariffs have had a profound impact on the snow crab industry, with a combined tariff rate exceeding 30% due to the 25% tariff and an additional 7% most-favored-nation tariff. Based on fleet financial reports and export data, BC fishermen's income has generally decreased by 25% to 50%.
