In 2024, a total of 161.8 million tonnes of raw cow, sheep, and goat milk were obtained in the European Union, which represents an increase of 0.9 million tonnes compared to 2023 and 12.1 million tonnes compared to the figure in 2014 (when production stood at 149.7 million tonnes). This data confirms the sustained growth in raw milk production in the EU over the last decade, according to data from Eurostat (European Statistical Office). Of this total volume, only 11 million tonnes were used on dairy farms for self-consumption or direct sale and the remaining 150.8 million were delivered to industries. Of these, 146.5 million correspond to cow's milk and the rest to sheep's milk (2.9 million tonnes), goat's milk (2.5 million) and also buffalo's milk (300,000 tonnes). In Greece, 58.1% of the milk delivered to industries is sheep and goat milk and in Cyprus the percentage is 21.4%.
