Between January and August of 2020, Switzerland experienced a 10% increase in the sales of fresh locally produced mushrooms compared to the previous year, totaling 10,000 tons. This growth was evident across various mushroom types, with royal oyster mushrooms seeing a 13% increase and Shiitake mushrooms, made in Switzerland, seeing an 11% increase. The coronavirus pandemic, which led to social distancing measures and restaurant closures, played a significant role in this surge in retail sales. The Swiss Mushroom Growers' Association (VSP) capitalized on this trend by introducing a new home cultivation kit for oyster mushrooms, aimed at both children and adults. This kit offers a way to engage in a new hobby while also supporting local mushroom farmers.
