The Spanish-French-Italian-Portuguese Strawberry Contact Group met to discuss the challenges facing the industry, including increased production costs, climatic adversities, and varying phytosanitary regulations. The group noted that these factors are leading to lower quality promotions and decreased prices for strawberries. The last campaign in Spain saw an 8.90% decrease in exports due to adverse weather conditions. France only had enough strawberries for 55% of the demand in the last season, and Italy has seen a decrease in exports to Germany and Switzerland due to strong competition from Greece. Portugal also reported a significant decrease in production due to weather issues. The group agreed to invite Greece to join the Contact Group due to the country's increasing presence in Central European markets.
