Although it is present in various parts of Argentina, in southern Patagonia hydatidosis generates special concern. It is the most important parasitic zoonosis there, which constitutes a problem not only of public health but also economic and productive. Caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus, this disease manifests with the formation of cysts in organs such as the liver and lungs, following the ingestion of eggs of the parasite. Dogs act as definitive hosts, eliminating eggs in their feces, while sheep, goats, and cattle, when grazing in contaminated areas, become intermediate hosts, developing the cysts. In this cycle, humans can become accidental hosts upon exposure to environmental risk factors. Efforts to control this disease aim to break the transmission cycle, through the deworming of dogs, the handling of slaughter to avoid the consumption of parasitized viscera, and health education, both for the community and for the specialists themselves.
