The European Commission's Common Fisheries Policy Facts and Figures report provides an overview of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the EU in 2022. The EU is the fifth largest producer of fish in the world, accounting for about 3% of global production. Marine and freshwater aquaculture employs about 70,000 people. The most important states in terms of fisheries are Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands and France, which together account for 58% of the total EU catch. Aquaculture production in the EU was around 1.37 million tonnes with a value of over €5 billion. The fish processing sector in the EU is generally profitable, with a turnover in 2018 around 30,000 million euros.
