The European Commission has imposed a unilateral ban on the import of Argentine citrus fruits, including oranges, tangerines, lemons, and grapefruits, until April 30, 2021. The ban is a precaution against the spread of the fungal disease, black rot (Spruce Citrus or Citrus Citrus), and is intended to protect European citrus producers. The decision comes after repeated detections of the disease in Argentine fruit supplies, leading to Argentina's voluntary decision to cease exporting lemons to the EU in mid-2020. The ban is particularly challenging for Argentina as it comes during the peak of its citrus export season. The Argentine government plans to engage in negotiations with the European Commission in hopes of lifting the ban.
