The EU warns of the danger that the reduction in fat consumption and China's self-sufficiency in both meat and dairy can pose to the agricultural sector

Brussels expects, between now and 2031, that the production of butter, cheese and pork in the EU will decrease, in the scenario in which the total fat consumption in the EU falls to the level recommended by the World Health Organization ( WHO). Exports will make up for part of the lost EU consumption. In addition, in a scenario in which China reaches self-sufficiency in meat and dairy products, the EU's pork is the most affected, leading to a drop in production and prices. Lower domestic prices lead to increased consumption. These are some of the projections in the two scenarios included in the European Union's agricultural outlook report for 2021-31 published on December 9, 2021 by the European Commission. The first scenario contemplates a gradual reduction to the level recommended by the WHO of total fat consumption of 30% at EU level.
