The Citrus Contact Group, which includes Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal, is taking the European Union to task over inadequate measures to prevent the introduction and spread of black spot, a fungus affecting citrus fruits. The group is particularly critical of the EU's refusal to enforce stricter controls on citrus imports from South Africa, a country with a significant number of black spot interceptions. AVA-ASAJA, the leading Spanish agricultural organization, is contemplating a legal suit against the EU to hold it accountable for potential damages arising from the introduction of pests or diseases not currently present in the European citrus industry. The group also highlights the need for the European Commission to adopt cold treatment for South African citrus to prevent the false moth, calling for similar measures to be extended to mandarins and pomelos.
