The Ministry of Industry in Indonesia is working to increase the added value of seaweed to make it more marketable both domestically and internationally. This includes optimizing the processing industry to benefit the national economy and farmers. Processed seaweed products are used in the food and non-food industries, as well as the pharmaceutical industry, and the waste from processing can be used for fertilizers and other products. The Ministry is encouraging downstreaming of the seaweed processing industry, shown by a visit to PT Hydrocolloid Indonesia, a company that produces most of its production for export. In 2020, Indonesia's dry seaweed production reached 376,000 tons and the export value of the seaweed processing industry was US$ 96.19 million.
