In July, the Benthic Crustacean Fisheries Program of the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) completed an advisory project with the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) of Chile to provide recommendations for the sustainable development of the crab fishery in the South Atlantic. The project, a part of an inter-institutional agreement, focused on reducing discards, protecting accompanying fauna, and minimizing interaction with marine mammals. INIDEP's expertise in using selectivity devices, such as escape rings in traps, was shared with IFOP to help reduce discard of juveniles and female crabs. This collaboration aims to contribute to the sustainable management of crab fishing in the Magallanes Region.
