In 2021, Vietnam emerged as the fifth-largest seafood supplier to Japan, exporting 111,000 tons valued at $840 million, with a market share of 7.3%. The country's strength lies in shrimp and tuna, which experienced a 16.5% and 15.9% increase in volume and value respectively. Despite a decline in the third quarter, tuna exports rebounded, generating over $759 million in 2021, a 17% increase from 2020. The US remained the largest importer of Vietnamese tuna. Overall, Vietnam's agricultural and aquatic product exports to Japan reached $1.8 billion in 2021, despite a slight decrease from 2020. The exports included coffee, vegetables, fruits, cashew nuts, and pepper, among other products. However, Vietnamese businesses face the challenge of meeting Japan's strict food hygiene and safety regulations and need to ensure price and supply stability to succeed in the Japanese market.
