The article highlights the dependency of Indonesia's poultry industry on imported feed ingredients, especially soybean meal (SBM), which has led to a significant increase in animal feed prices. Despite the successful reduction of corn imports for animal feed, SBM and meat bone meal (MBM) imports remain high due to limited local production and quality issues. Experts suggest a synergy between institutions to assist farmers and processors in technology application, infrastructure support, and logistics improvement to decrease reliance on imports. They also point out the potential of soybean farming in Indonesia to meet animal feed demands, given the industry's high economic value and the country's suitable climate for soybean cultivation. However, challenges such as low farmer interest due to fluctuating local soybean prices and low productivity need to be addressed for a sustainable local supply of feed ingredients.
