The chestnut harvest in Huelva is expected to see a significant reduction this year due to the ongoing drought, as the early harvest shows small sea urchins, raising concerns about the quantity of chestnuts. The majority of the harvest is expected to begin on October 11, with the Sanmigueleña variety, which has less commercial value. The late harvest, which is the most profitable, may see a reduction of half, although it usually begins on November 1. Last year's harvest also faced challenges due to the drought and ended with slightly under 1.5 million kilos of chestnuts, less than the initial forecasts. The Sierra Huelva has 5,000 hectares of chestnut trees, but a significant portion is abandoned due to a lack of profitability, posing problems such as pests, diseases, and the risk of being lost as an ecosystem without human care.
