In a significant move for sustainable fishing, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in Spain has announced the allocation of fishing quotas for yellowfin tuna in the Indian Ocean for 2024. Spain has been granted a quota of 42,473.97 tons, accounting for 60% of the EU's total allowable catches of 73,078 tons, as determined by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission. This decision is part of a broader regulation by the Council of the European Union aimed at promoting sustainable fishing practices from 2024 to 2026. Currently, 15 Spanish tuna vessels, which are certified for quality and safety, have been authorized to operate in this region. This initiative not only ensures Spain's supply of fish protein but also aids in the economic development and job creation in the Indian Ocean countries, highlighting Spain's commitment to sustainable and responsible fishing practices.
