The Netherlands saw an 8% increase in the import of fresh fruit and vegetables, reaching € 9 billion in 2020. Avocado was the most imported product, followed by blueberries and oranges. The majority of fruit was imported from South Africa and Peru. The production value of Dutch fruit and vegetable growers increased from € 3.7 billion in 2019 to € 3.9 billion in 2020. However, not all growers had a successful year, with tomato growers experiencing a decline due to the loss of the hotel and catering industry. On the other hand, bell pepper and aubergine growers saw higher prices. Germany was the largest market for Dutch fruit and vegetables, followed by the United Kingdom. Exports to distant destinations like the United States and Japan fell due to the cancellation of passenger flights.
