The Northern bonito campaign with MSC sustainable fishing certificate is progressing at a good pace

The 2020 Northern bonito campaign is well under way, with 75% of the quota caught in early August. Specifically, at this time, there are 164 certified inshore fleet vessels from the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias that catch bonito eligible to carry the MSC seal. The fishery targets the bonito in the Bay of Biscay and adjacent waters by means of pole and trolling gear. They are traditional methods that keep stocks in good condition and hardly generate incidental catches. The initial certification took place in 2016 at the initiative of the Basque fleet and the Cofradía de San Martín de Laredo.
