Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine's research predicts a decrease in Turkey's buffalo population to 130,000 by 2030, a 40% drop from the current 170,000, if current trends continue. Located in the Kızılırmak Delta in Samsun, the largest buffalo population in Turkey, OMU is conducting comprehensive studies on buffalo meat and dairy products, highlighting their unique qualities and potential for added value. These products, renowned for their superior fat and dry matter content in milk, and higher cholesterol and protein in meat, have therapeutic benefits, particularly for athletes and the elderly. The research aims to boost the popularity of these products and support the development of Turkey's animal husbandry sector.
