Georgia has emerged as a significant player in the olive oil industry, with a cultivation area of 2,500 hectares and a production of 45 tons of extra virgin olive oil in the 2019-2020 campaign. The country, which started olive cultivation in 2014, has around 7,000 olive trees, primarily in the Kakhet region. The yield is 2.4 tons of table olives and 0.384 tons of olive oil per hectare. The consumption of olive oil in Georgia is predominantly for food use, with 215 tons consumed out of the total animal and vegetable fats consumed in the country. The consumption is more prevalent among women, especially in the age group 34-49 and among middle-aged families with children. The majority of the population uses raw olive oil for seasoning.
