Since December, there has been a significant increase of 61% in the average wholesale price of frozen lamb legs in Australia, rising from A$9.09/kg to A$14.67/kg. This price surge is largely due to increased demand from the United States, despite local factors causing prices to fluctuate. The price trend in Australia preceded that in the US by about three months, with a recovery in demand and increased prices for other proteins contributing to the rise in the US. Despite a decline in indicators such as the Heavy Lamb Indicator and Light Lamb Indicator at the start of the year, the strong demand for lamb in the US has helped buffer heavy lamb prices. The positive global demand for Australian red meat is seen as a good sign for producers, especially with competitors reducing supply and consumer spending remaining robust in key markets.
