The Valencian Association of Farmers (AVA-Asaja) has highlighted significant issues in the Spanish agri-food chain, with a focus on the disparity between production costs and selling prices for onions and potatoes. Local producers are facing significant financial challenges as they struggle with prices that are only 40% of their production costs, while consumers are paying prices that are up to ten times higher. The introduction of foreign imports, especially from New Zealand following the Suez Canal blockade, has worsened the situation. AVA-Asaja's head, Salvador Sabater, points out the environmental concerns and quality issues associated with imported products, advocating for the prioritization of local, fairly priced products to reduce the environmental impact and support local farmers. AVA-Asaja's president, Cristóbal Aguado, criticizes the political class for allowing unregulated imports and calls for a shift towards local, environmentally sustainable agriculture.
