The article highlights the significant growth in melon production on Santa Maria island, expected to surpass 110 tons in 2020 due to favorable weather conditions and beneficial agricultural diversification efforts. This growth not only has economic implications, reducing imports and increasing exports, but also reflects the government's focus on sustainable water management. A substantial investment of over 150 thousand euros has been made in a water supply system in Ribeira do Aveiro, supporting around two dozen farms and promoting sustainability by reducing water abstraction. Additionally, a memorandum was signed to improve water management and coordination, with the municipality of Vila do Porto overseeing the maintenance of agricultural infrastructure, including networks and systems for water capture, storage, and supply to crops. This investment and collaborative approach aim to enhance the agricultural sector's efficiency and resilience, indicating a substantial commitment to improving Santa Maria's agricultural infrastructure and productivity.
