(Jeonju=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jin-bang = The Rural Development Administration announced on the 27th that it has developed a new variety of green beans, 'Chaeheun,' which is resistant to falling, has less pod shattering, and is suitable for mechanical harvesting.
Green beans are known as a healthy food rich in antioxidants such as vitexin and polyphenols, which have excellent anti-inflammatory and detoxification functions.
Recently, demand has been rapidly increasing with the popularity of dishes such as rice noodles and stir-fried beans. However, the harvesting process required a lot of labor and had low cultivation efficiency, which posed difficulties.
According to the Rural Development Administration, domestic annual green bean consumption increased from 5,927 tons in 2015 to 8,000 tons in 2022. However, the green bean cultivation area (in 2022) was 2,403 hectares, with a self-sufficiency rate of only 24.5%.
Chaeheun is shorter at 65 cm compared to the existing main cultivated variety 'Sanpo,' has less pod shattering, and has a lower loss rate during mechanical harvesting with a combine harvester. Productivity is also 257 kg per 1,000 square meters, which is 13% higher than Sanpo (228 kg).
Kim Dong-hoon, who conducted a pilot cultivation of Chaeheun in Haenam, Jeonnam, said, "Chaeheun grows less lushly, so there is less jamming on the combine harvester day, and harvesting is possible in about 30 minutes per 1,000 square meters." He expressed his intention to increase the cultivation area next year by securing propagation seeds.
Starting from March next year, Chaeheun can be purchased through municipal agricultural technology centers or individual applications.
Kim Ki-young, head of the Field Crop Development Division at the Rural Development Administration, said, "Chaeheun is a variety optimized for mechanical harvesting, developed to meet the demand for reducing agricultural labor and securing quantity." He added, "We will continue to steadily develop various functional green bean varieties reflecting the needs of the field."
