The forecast for the 2022 stone fruit harvest in Spain, as reported by Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de España, is showing a significant decrease compared to previous years, with a projected total production of 896,841 tons, which is 31% less than 2021 and 39% less than the average of the last 5 years. This decline is primarily due to severe frost damage caused by the Ciril storm in early April, the most intense weather event in the sector in 42 years. The main stone fruit crops, including nectarines, peaches, pavia, and paraguayans, are all expected to see substantial drops. Despite these challenges, the sector is working to manage the impact of rising costs from the Ukraine conflict and maintain balance throughout the supply chain. In contrast, other European producing countries like Italy, France, and Greece are experiencing a recovery and are projected to have higher production levels for the year.
