A recent conference in Nam Dinh, Vietnam, highlighted the potential of mollusc and seaweed production, with a focus on the health benefits of seaweed and plans to expand cultivation. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung discussed the nutritional value and benefits of seaweed for health and beauty products. The Department of Fisheries aims to increase the seaweed growing area to 16,500 hectares by 2024, producing 155,000 tons. The Vietnam Fisheries Association plans to increase seaweed output from 180,000 tons to 500,000 tons by 2030. Despite these plans, the pricing and stability of raw seaweed are currently low and unstable, with most sold through traders rather than directly to manufacturing enterprises. The global market for seaweed is projected to grow significantly, reaching 5.56 billion USD from 2023-2028, with Vietnam's seaweed export turnover being very modest. The industry faces challenges but is seen as a foundation for sustainable aquaculture due to its environmental friendliness and fast growth rate.
