The Protected Designation of Origin Torta del Casar cheese saw a significant decrease in certification and turnover in the 2020 season, with a 19% drop compared to 2019. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the certification index for the cheese reached 95.2%, and the product remained popular in the market. The majority of sales were made in Spain, with a slight increase in regions such as Madrid, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community, offsetting the decrease in Extremadura. Exports made up a small portion of sales, primarily to Europe, and there was a shift in consumer preference towards smaller formats of the cheese. Overall, the industry remains resilient and is optimistic for the future.
