On August 1, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture announced that the government plans to purchase up to $230 million worth of seafood, fruits, and vegetables from U.S. producers, to be distributed to food banks and nutrition assistance programs across the country.
The government has allocated $100 million to purchase Alaska pollock products, including frozen fish sticks in 20/2 lb packages, battered fish sticks in 40-lb boxes, frozen fish fillets in 20/2 lb packages, and frozen fish chunks in 20/2 lb packages.
According to relevant regulations, the Department of Agriculture can use 30% of the total tariffs collected from the previous year to support agricultural programs, with nearly $10 billion allocated annually in recent years, most of which goes to increasing child nutrition, with another portion transferred to commercial fishing activities.
As of now, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has cumulatively purchased $57.29 million worth of pollock products, amounting to 26 million pounds. If the new allocation of $100 million is added, 2025 will be the year with the highest amount of pollock product purchases.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a bid notice to Alaska pollock producers, but the specific details have not yet been released. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's fiscal year will end on September 30, and the government will release the bidding requirements and related award details before the deadline.
