Prof. Dr. Ali Çelik from Adnan Menderes University in Turkey has identified the country's potential to increase its income from medicinal and aromatic plants, of which there are over 12,000 varieties, including 4,000 endemic ones. Currently, the country's income from these plants is merely millions of dollars, but with the necessary support for farmers, academic involvement, and improved processing methods, the potential exists to boost this to $150 billion. Çelik pointed out that other countries like Spain, Italy, and Iran are already achieving significant revenues from these plants. In Denizli, Turkey, the cultivation of oily lavender is on the rise, with the potential to generate $150 billion, given the appropriate support and policies. Ethem Tümbek, an agricultural engineer who runs a thyme and lavender nursery, is providing free consultancy to producers, emphasizing the potential of medicinal and aromatic herbs as an alternative product with an open market and relatively easy production.
