Hungary is the leading producer of horseradish in the European Union, accounting for nearly half of the EU's annual production with over 12,000 tonnes in 2021. Despite the challenges of last year's drought, the Hungarian crop outperformed foreign varieties in dry matter content. The majority of the production is exported to Germany, Poland, the UK, and the Czech Republic. Despite significant domestic consumption, most horseradish is used for commercial improvements of taste and texture. The plant, particularly grown in Hajdú-Bihar county, Hungary, is known for its unique pungent taste and health benefits like vitamin C, bactericidal, and antiviral properties.
