The Institute of Agrarian Economics has found that banning cell breeding of calves in Bulgaria is likely to have no negative effects for producers and consumers, and may even have benefits such as more automation and lower labor costs. The transition to group rearing of calves would cost between 350 and 700 euros per cage, a total investment of 1.4-1.6 million euros, which is a small fraction of the total milk production value in Bulgaria. The analysis also suggests that banning calf rearing in cages would improve milk quality, which is likely to increase consumer satisfaction and improve the nutrition quality of products.
