In the first quarter of 2021, Kazakhstan's per capita food expenditure rose by 4.6% year-over-year to 96.7 thousand tenge, with regional differences in spending. Almaty, Pavlodar, and East Kazakhstan residents had the highest food expenses. The lowest was in Shymkent. The largest annual growth in spending was in Zhambyl, while the largest reduction was in North Kazakhstan. The majority of expenses were on meat, bakery products, and cereals, with a significant increase in egg costs and a decrease in sugar, confectionery, and sweets costs. Kazakhstan's residents spend almost half of their income on food, which is last in a study of European countries in terms of the share of spending on food and leisure.
