The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in the Philippines is using heated tanks to increase the production of locally-produced milkfish fry. The tanks use water heaters to maintain high water temperatures, inducing milkfish broodstock to spawn during the off-season. This could help the Philippines reduce its dependence on imports, as it currently falls short of its annual requirement of 2.5 billion fry. The experiment was successful, with the control tank producing no fry, while the treated tank saw the hatching of 12.5 million larvae from approximately 23.6 million eggs. The heated tank system is part of a larger initiative that includes the expansion of hatcheries and improvement of milkfish breeders.
