The UPA-UCE Extremadura has reported a dramatic 121% increase in agricultural insurance costs for tomato producers in the region, under a new plan that also raises rates and reduces coverage for cereals and fruits. This surge in insurance costs is expected to significantly impact farmers' earnings, particularly for tomato farmers who are projected to earn 2,000 euros less per hectare while facing doubled insurance expenses. The organization is calling for better insurance coverage and support from the Ministry, autonomous communities, and the establishment of a specific EU fund to mitigate the impacts of climate change on agriculture, emphasizing the critical role of agricultural insurance in safeguarding farmers against climate-related challenges.
