The spread of avian influenza (H5N1) in Germany is dramatic. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) estimates that over 400,000 farm animals – including laying hens, turkeys, and ducks – have already been destroyed in a very short period of time due to outbreaks of avian influenza. All federal provinces except Bremen have already been affected by the animal disease, comments Agrarheute. The first case of the current wave of the avian flu epidemic was recently confirmed in a turkey flock in the bird-rich district of Vechta. Around 14,000 turkeys had to be culled there. In the neighboring district of Cloppenburg, a 30-day ban on rehousing turkeys on farms located in the restricted access zones has been in effect since October 26, 2025.
