Mexico's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in partnership with the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), has introduced new measures to safeguard the endemic vaquita porpoise and combat illegal totoaba traffic in the northern Gulf of California. These measures, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, introduce new indicators, triggers, and actions for monitoring fishing activities, respecting Ground Zero in the Upper Gulf of California, and may lead to temporary fishery closures. The regulations aim to support the conservation of endangered species like the vaquita porpoise and totoaba, and are a result of international sustainability agreements and collaborations with various institutions and organizations.
