The article highlights the importance of bixin, a colorant obtained from achiote seeds, in various industries such as food, textile, and pharmaceuticals, and its increasing use in cosmetics due to its antioxidant properties. Currently, Brazil and Africa are the main producers due to low cost and high bixin content. Peru is looking to increase its competitiveness by promoting research, innovation, and the development of new varieties of annatto with a high bixin content. The National Institute of Innovation Agrarian (INIA) is conducting a study with the Association of Exporters (ADEX) to identify annatto plants with superior qualities and yield, with the goal of increasing their competitiveness in the global market. A chiote garden has been installed in Pichanaki, Junín, to evaluate the quality and quantity of the specimens collected from different parts of Peru.
