The Catch And Release Tagging Programme (CHART), a three-year research initiative aimed at studying Bluefin Tuna populations in English waters, has been deemed a success. The collaborative effort involved scientists, policymakers, anglers, skippers, and conservationists, and provided valuable scientific data while also benefiting coastal economies. The programme enabled 15 charter skippers to legally catch Bluefin Tuna in UK waters, resulting in the deployment of 3177 tags, 1655 trips, and 4490 anglers participating. It also generated an economic impact of £2.6 million, contributing £733k of Gross Value Added (GVA) and supporting around 34 full-time jobs in the South-West of England. The project's success has led to the announcement of a recreational catch and release fisheries in UK waters by summer 2024.
