Erciyes University Agricultural Research and Application Center (ERUTAM) in Turkey is using hydroponics to breed new drought-resistant tomato varieties from local genotypes and those brought in from Ghana and Iraq. The research involves growing 16 different open pollinated tomato genotypes in a soilless deep water culture, analyzing their root morphology, growth, development, and biochemical properties under stress conditions. The goal is to identify drought-resistant varieties with strong root morphology to be used as rootstocks for less drought-resistant tomato varieties. The research could potentially increase tomato production in arid areas, as seen in Central Anatolia, and could also help improve the yield and quality of other crops like lettuce, pepper, spinach, and sugar beet under water stress.
