In 2021, the Netherlands emerged as a leading trade hub for fresh fruit and vegetables, with exports valued at 13.1 billion euros, a 1% increase from the previous year. The majority of these goods, approximately 95%, were consumed within Europe, with Germany, Belgium, and the UK being the primary markets. The Netherlands experienced a 2% increase in the export value of fresh vegetables, while fresh fruit exports remained stable. However, there was a 1% decrease in the total weight of fresh produce exported. Despite the overall decline in sales to the UK, Dutch trading companies saw a 13% increase in fruit and vegetable sales in Italy and a 16% increase in sales to Ireland. The country also imported 3% more fresh produce, valued at 9.2 billion euros, with a 9% increase in the import of vegetables and a 1% increase in fresh fruit.
