In early 2025, Turkey's imports of sunflower seeds surged to 396 thousand tons, a 4.3-fold increase from the previous year, due to a domestic shortage caused by crop failure. Romania and Moldova were the main suppliers. Turkey also imported 308 thousand tons of sunflower oil and 367 thousand tons of sunflower meal, mainly from Russia, underscoring its dependency on foreign sources for its processing industry. Despite increased imports, Turkey continued to export significant amounts of sunflower oil to markets like Ethiopia, Libya, and EU countries.
