Ukraine has seen a sixfold increase in apple exports to Sub-Saharan Africa in the 2020/21 season, reaching a record 630 tons, which accounts for less than 4% of its total apple exports. The number of countries importing Ukrainian apples in the region has increased from two to nine. Despite the potential decrease in interest due to Belarus' increased purchases of apples from Ukraine, the high price and prepayment received from African importers make it a beneficial market. Ukrainian apple exporters need to ensure the quality and safety of the fruit for the hot African climate, where refrigeration is not available.
